Czechoslovaks in a Flyers uniform – Jan Hlavac

Filip Strych is our Czech correspondent who contributes to philadelphiaflyers.cz, the following is an article from that site. This week we are going to continue our Czechoslovakian blog with Jan Hlavac, another Kladno-born player who played for the Philadelphia Flyers. Despite his short tenure with the team he will be remembered as a part of the Lindros trade to the Rangers. Jan was born on September 20, 1976 in Prague where he started his career with one of the best teams HC Sparta Prague during the 1993/1994 season. The following year, the New York Islanders chose Hlavac in the second round, 28th overall. …

Then and Now: Jon Sim

Jon Sim became a member of the Philadelphia Flyers’ organization during the 2004-2005 season, when he became a member of the Philadelphia Phantoms in exchange for Peter White. After he played in 10 games alongside Keith Ballard, Kiel McLeod, and Fredrik Sjostrom for the Utah Grizzlies in their final season in the American Hockey League, Sim joined the 2005 Calder Cup winners for the final 63 regular season games of the title year. He recorded the second-most points for the Phantoms with 35 goals and 26 assists for 61 points, four shy of R.J. Umberger’s total. The difference was Umberger …

After producing four goals and three assists in six games in the AHL, Sacco was called up to the Flyers and spent the rest of the season in the NHL. He had a total of six points in 34 games for the Flyers with five assists along with 20 PIMs and an even plus/minus rating. The right winger’s only …

Then and Now: Sami Kapanen

In the middle of the 2002-2003 regular season, the Philadelphia Flyers shipped defenseman Bruno St. Jacques and winger Pavel Brendl to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for a pair of players. Ryan Bast was one player Philly acquired in the deal, a defenseman who only played a pair of games in the NHL, both of which were with the Flyers. The other was Sami Kapanen, a veteran left winger in his eighth season in the NHL. After several seasons with the Hartford Whalers’ organization, who became the Hurricanes in his third season with the club, Kapanen became a member of his …

The Zambonis

Review: Five-Minute Major (In D Minor)

It’s hard to believe that a band that writes songs solely about hockey could amount to much more than a novelty act but The Zambonis did just that. The Connecticut-based band has defied all odds and strung together a hockey-related career that has lasted significantly longer in North America than Pavel Brendl. Since forming in 1991, The Zambonis released eight albums (from what I can gather), survived two lockouts, saw the NHL expand to 30 teams, and watched as numerous teams relocated, included the band members’ favorite, Hartford Whalers. FIve Minute Major (In D Minor) pays tribute to the defunct …
