Win streak ends in Winnipeg, Flyers lose 4-1 to Jets

The Philadelphia Flyers saw their four-game win streak snapped today in Winnipeg with a 4-1 loss to the Jets. Evander Kane and Bryan Little each had a goal and an assist, while Blake Wheeler registered two assists in a four-goal second period for the Jets. Ruslan Fedotenko was the lone Flyer to beat Ondrej Pavelec, as the goaltender made 30 saves for the win. Ilya Bryzgalov made 12 saves on 16 shots against before being pulled after the conclusion of the second period. The goaltender didn’t receive too much help in terms of his defenseman clearing out rebounds in front …

Hey Flyers, Quit Playing Games With My Heart

I’m not taking the bait. I don’t want to. It is not happening. I refuse! I love my Flyers, but I will not begin to now believe that this team is hitting their stride and will make the playoffs. No way, no how! I said it two weeks ago: a loss to the Penguins and Rangers and the season was done. Finished. Caput! What did the Flyers do? Lost in overtime to the Penguins and got dismantled by the Rangers, so not exactly out of it then. The Flyers followed that Rangers loss with a shootout loss to the Islanders!??! …

Ilya and Danny, you are here to tell us why you should remain with the team. Peter and Claude are here for their input as coach and team captain. Bryzgalov leads Flyers to 3-1 win over Bruins

The Philadelphia Flyers grabbed two points today with a 3-1 win over the Boston Bruins today at the Wells Fargo Center. The trio of Mike Knuble, Matt Read, and Ruslan Fedotenko found the back of the net today, as the only visitor to beat Ilya Bryzgalov in victory was Nathan Horton. Bryz had 33 saves to Tuukka Rask’s 19, as Rask allowed two goals on 21 shots. With both teams coming off of bad losses, the Flyers scored the game’s first two goals and managed to earn two points despite being outshot 34-22 in the tilt. Thanks to Bryzgalov’s goaltending …

Oh my God, we're not having a fire... sale (yet)!

Looking forward: Who stays?

Planning for next season. It’s the phrase you have heard in recent days and will continue to hear after each excruciating loss and lackluster performance. It is a way of saying that season is beyond repair and that the organization will make no knee-jerk moves or hasty decisions. Take, for instance, Peter Laviolette. Whether he is a fall guy or responsible for the poor play of the team is irrelevant at this point. As Chris Therien said on the radio last night, “Each coach has an expiration date. You get hired to get fired.” It’s an inevitability, a foregone conclusion. Lavy is merely …

Kennedy scores winner in overtime, Flyers lose 2-1 in Pittsburgh

Unfortunately for the Philadelphia Flyers they couldn’t continue their annual tradition of ending a lengthy Pittsburgh Penguins’ winning streak, as the Pens squeaked out a 2-1 overtime win at the CONSOL Energy Center tonight. Tyler Kennedy’s fifth goal of this shortened season beat Ilya Bryzgalov 2:33 into overtime, as Pittsburgh extended their winning streak to 12 games. Claude Giroux was the lone Flyer to beat Marc-Andre Fleury in the loss, while Sidney Crosby took advantage off a 5-on-3 power play late in the contest to send it past regulation. Fleury had 27 saves to Bryzgalov’s 33 to earn the win this …

The Dirty Half Dozen: Six choices for the next Flyers head coach

No matter which way you figure, the sands in the hourglass of Peter Laviolette’s tenure as Philadelphia Flyers head coach are rapidly descending towards the bottom. The power vacuum, whether it is created during this six-day block, at the trade deadline or following the completion of this truncated season, will leave a huge question mark as far as discerning which direction the franchise will head going forward. When it occurs, Laviolette will be the latest in a string of those given the reins, who didn’t manage to make it through four seasons at the helm. That’s where our feats of …

Stamkos and Lindback help Bolts edge Flyers in Tampa Bay

The Philadelphia Flyers lost another pivotal game tonight in Tampa Bay, as the Lightning handed the visitors a 4-2 loss. Teddy Purcell deposited the game-winner halfway through the third period, while Steven Stamkos recorded his 200th goal in the NHL in a two-point effort. Max Talbot and Claude Giroux were the only Flyers to beat Anders Lindback, as Tampa Bay’s goaltender made 28 stops for the victory. With the tilt tied at two midway through the third period, Purcell tipped home his sixth of 2013 to hand the Lightning two points tonight in Tampa Bay. Stamkos managed to grab a …

Shootout? Shootout! Flyers Beat Devils 2-1.

Matt Read and Claude Giroux both scored in the shootout to lead the Flyers to a 2-1 shootout victory and a 2-1 win over the New Jersey Devils. Max Talbot scored for the Flyers reversed a downward trend versus the Devils beating New Jersey for the first time in the last eight games over the last two seasons. The Flyers have now won two of the last three games. Ilya Bryzgalov was outstanding for the Flyers, stopping 27 of the 28 shots he faced. Bryzgalov was also stellar in the shootout, turning away 2 of 3 Devil attempts. David Clarkson …

Crashing the Crease: Ilya Bryzgalov Cannot Succeed in Philadelphia

This week’s Crashing the Crease comes to you with a somber tone, as the Flyers’ season appears primed to crash and burn. Some of the same wretched storylines we’re so used to being beaten over the head with are creeping into view: “Should [insert Flyers coach] be worried about his job? Who should the Flyers next goalie be? What major move will the Flyers make to fix this?” Part of the issue, in my mind, is this overly reactive approach from the top down. Don’t get me wrong — I love and respect what Ed Snider did for the city …
