Flyers Blanked in New Jersey

The Philadelphia Flyers lost their third straight game tonight in a goalless, penalty-filled 3-0 effort to the New Jersey Devils at the Prudential Center. Martin Brodeur recorded a 24-save shutout, while Travis Zajac provided the game-winning goal just over a minute into the contest. David Clarkson and Ilya Kovalchuk also scored for Jersey in the win, as the Flyers’ special teams hurt them yet again early in the 2013 campaign. Not only did the Flyers’ power play go 0-for-6, they allowed a goal against while on the man advantage due to a short-handed penalty shot tally from Kovalchuk early in …

CBA Explained: Contract term limit, additional year expires upon reaching free agency

Prior to the expiration of the old Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), I ran a column I called CBA 101. In it, I attempted to explain some of the more important nuances of the CBA as it relates to putting a team on the ice. Many (honestly, most), of those topics are still applicable today, so I would encourage you to check them out. People frequently ask me “why do you care about that stuff?” Well, the way I see it, this boring, legal verbiage directly effects the team that Paul Holmgren and other General Managers are able to put on …

Rinaldo hurt, McGinn called up

As if it weren’t bad enough the Flyers fell to 0-2 with a 5-2 loss at Buffalo on Sunday, forward Zac Rinaldo will be out of the lineup for at least one week after suffering a 20-stitch gash on his right leg. The feisty winger left the game in the first period and did not return after taking the worst of a collision with Sabres defenseman Robyn Regehr. “It was a weird feeling. I looked at my pad, and the sock was cut. It was like an X-acto knife cut it. I saw that and I was pissed off it …

Flight Plan: Week of 01.21.2013

The Philadelphia Flyers had a rough start to this condensed 48-game schedule as they dropped both ends of a back-to-back over the weekend. A loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins is never fun, but despite looking flat in the first period, the Flyers really only lost by one goal as the Penguins scored an empty netter late in the third period to seal the win. The game against the Buffalo Sabres was disconcerting to say the least as the Flyers lost 5-2 and allowed two quick goals in the third period and another empty net goal with just under a minute …
