All Clear: NHLPA ratifies new CBA

We have seen the top of the mountain, and it is good. Earlier on Saturday afternoon, the members of the National Hockey League Players’ Association voted to ratify the new Collective Bargaining Agreement between the NHLPA and the National Hockey League. That means the final remaining hurdle to the 2013 season has been overcome. From the NHLPA release: “While the players’ vote ratifies the new CBA with the NHL owners, a written Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) consistent with what the players voted on, must be completed before the Agreement becomes final. The NHLPA and the NHL continue their work to …

Hockey Hilarity: A little bit Rusty

Friday funnies brought to you straight from hockey’s own players and media personnel. We’ll be mucking it up every week right here, examining puck ups, puns, tweets, and more! We’ve been ready for NHL brand hockey to start since October and it looks as if it finally will start on January 19th. A lot of people might have forgotten that the Philadelphia Flyers have a couple new faces joining their lineup. One of those new faces is actually an old one. The guy’s name is Ruslan Fedotenko. Ruslan, who has been known to go by Rusty, was an undrafted signee of …

Glens Falls’ best hope for future is still to support the team it has now

When the Phantoms announced last week they’d remain in Glens Falls for another season, their release contained a caveat that struck an unusual note to those not attuned to the unique rhythms of the drawn out dance between city and team. Fairly high in the Phantoms’ statement, Glens Falls’ mayor Jack Diamond trumpeted the franchise’s pledge to step aside for parts unknown next season should another franchise pledge to move to Glens Falls. “Why announce that part,” the Flyers own inside reporter Anthony SanFilippo wrote on Twitter. “Doesn’t instill confidence for fans for next season.” That was a pretty typical reaction outside …

The Cap impacts and “recapture” risks of the Luongo rumor

Before I even begin to get into any financials, I’d like to first point out that I do not personally think there is any merit to rumors involving Roberto Luongo getting traded to the Flyers. I don’t think it makes much sense at all. If Bryzgalov is a long term risk, so is Luongo. With that said, there were some rumblings in the Twitter world from some respected people. Despite some denials, the tweet earlier from @enricociccone is accurate. The Flyers are interested in Roberto Luongo. — james duthie (@tsnjamesduthie) January 10, 2013   Paul Holmgren going in on Luongo big …

Then and Now: Adam Oates

Adam Oates entered the league quietly and left the league just the same, but the former center was rewarded for his playing career recently when he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. After he joined the Detroit Red Wings during the 1985-1986 season as an undrafted free agent out of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Oates went on to finish 16th on the all-time points list with 1,420. Known as one of the game’s greatest playmakers, Oates finished sixth on the all-time NHL assists list with 1,079, which is more than Gordie Howe and Mario Lemieux. Oates was one of …

Noebels Named ECHL All-Star

Marcel Noebels is the Trenton Titans’ lone representative at the 2013 ECHL All-Star Game, which will be a contest between the ECHL All-Stars and the Colorado Eagles on Wednesday, January 23 in Loveland, Colorado. The Philadelphia Flyers’ fourth-round selection in 2011 is one of nine rookies to be selected to this year’s All-Star squad. Noebels is currently second on the Titans with 30 points, as the first-year professional has 11 goals and 19 helpers in 31 games for the Flyers’ affiliate this year. Welcome to the newest edition of “Point/Counterpoint,” where a pair of Flyers Faithful scribes present both sides of one particular issue with their own unique view and flair. Point, Nick: Nail-biting white-knuckling, heart-attack-inducing intensity. Every game, every minute, every point will be huge. Anything can happen. Basically what you can expect is all around great hockey every single night and since it is NHL …

Flyers luck out with “cap-recapture” system, Richards and Carter deals won’t haunt Flyers

Yesterday I posed my top remaining questions about thew new CBA, and one of those questions was whether or not the “cap-recapture” system which was proposed at some point during negotiations, would ever come to fruition. Dubbed the “screw you Paul Holmgren rule” by Travis Hughes of Broad Street Hockey, it was designed to penalize teams for signing players to “back-diving” contracts that serve to reduce a player’s cap hit. As it turns out, that “cap-recapture” rule is officially a part of the CBA. While not all of the details are known, what is known is that it has the potential …
