All that separates the Toledo Walleye, the team sitting fifth in the Eastern Conference, and the Evansville IceMen, who sit last in the Eastern Conference, is 10 points. With that being said, a team that was in the Trenton Titans’ position of being out of the playoff picture can quickly change with a string of wins. Late in December of 2006, the Philadelphia Flyers claimed forward Dmitry Afanasenkov off of waivers from the Tampa Bay Lightning. Impressed with his three goals and three assists in 33 games, Philly decided to dress the winger for 41 games in their lowly 2006-2007 campaign. Paul Holmgren became the interim General Manager of the Philadelphia Flyers on October 22, 2006. That interim title was removed only weeks later on November 11. Holmgren was able to take a team that finished last in the National Hockey League, and rebuild it to make a deep run all the way to the Eastern Conference Finals the very next season. A pair of forwards in the Philadelphia Flyers’ system were injured this week, as both Ben Holmstrom and Andrew Johnston suffered setbacks. Holmstrom, the team’s captain, left the Phantoms’ December 8 game against the Syracuse Crunch, which turned out to be a 4-3 shootout victory, due to an injury to his knee. It was announced on Saturday that the forward will undergo surgery on his right knee this Thursday.
