As the name suggests, restricted free agency is a type of free agency in which the player has the ability to entertain offers from other clubs; but there are certain restrictions in place. The “Prior Team” who owned the player’s rights throughout the previous season, maintains those rights and can retain that player if they so choose. The first step in maintaining those rights is to present a qualifying offer to the restricted free agent, which would grant the team what is known as the “Right of First Refusal”. Kyle Greentree has played in 373 AHL games, but has only taken part in four NHL games. Two of his four games in the NHL were with the Philadelphia Flyers during the 2007-2008 season. Although he has yet to register a point in the NHL, Greentree has four 20-goal seasons in the AHL. After his third season at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, Greentree joined the Philadelphia Phantoms for the end of the 2006-07 season. With the signings of Bruno Gervais and Ruslan Fedotenko, the Flyers now sit at 50 contracts, with two that slide, resulting in 48 of their allowed 50 contracts. It seems like every year the Flyers operate at or near the 50-contract limit. It is the reason why people, myself included, sometimes question what may appear to be frivolous, long-shot signings, such as with a total unknown like Andrew Johnston out of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League. When free agency rolls around, there is always discussion about how the newly signed contracts are laid out. Is it front loaded, back loaded, or relatively even year to year? You’ll often even hear discussion with respect to Restricted Free Agents, such as in the case of Shea Weber currently, and attempting to sign him to such a hugely front-loaded offer sheet that Nashville could not match. As I’m sure you are now aware, yesterday the Flyers signed Bruno Gervais to a two-year contract with a cap hit of $825k. That fact in itself isn’t too terrible. The guy is 27 years old, right handed (which must be Homer’s #1 requirement this offseason), and played over 14 minutes a night last season with Tampa Bay. In fact, he had two seasons with the Islanders where he averaged over 20 minutes a night. So the guy is probably a relatively adequate third pairing guy, that comes at a good price.
