CBA 101 Part 9: Restricted Free Agent Compensation

As the name suggests, restricted free agency is a type of free agency in which the player has the ability to entertain offers from other clubs; but there are certain restrictions in place. The “Prior Team” who owned the player’s rights throughout the previous season, maintains those rights and can retain that player if they so choose. The first step in maintaining those rights is to present a qualifying offer to the restricted free agent, which would grant the team what is known as the “Right of First Refusal”. If the restricted free agent were to sign an “offer sheet” …

Then and Now: Kyle Greentree

Kyle Greentree has played in 373 AHL games, but has only taken part in four NHL games. Two of his four games in the NHL were with the Philadelphia Flyers during the 2007-2008 season. Although he has yet to register a point in the NHL, Greentree has four 20-goal seasons in the AHL. After his third season at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, Greentree joined the Philadelphia Phantoms for the end of the 2006-07 season. The left winger deposited two goals in eight games, as he scored in back-to-back contests. Greentree’s presence on the team didn’t matter much, as Philadelphia …

Flyers once again operating near 50 contract limit

With the signings of Bruno Gervais and Ruslan Fedotenko, the Flyers now sit at 50 contracts, with two that slide, resulting in 48 of their allowed 50 contracts. It seems like every year the Flyers operate at or near the 50-contract limit. It is the reason why people, myself included, sometimes question what may appear to be frivolous, long-shot signings, such as with a total unknown like Andrew Johnston out of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League. It isn’t that I distrust the Flyers scouts; afterall they’ve recently hit on players like Matt Read, Harry Zolnierczyk, and Erik Gustafsson. Even someone like …

CBA 101 Part 8: the 100 Percent Rule and Shea Weber

When free agency rolls around, there is always discussion about how the newly signed contracts are laid out. Is it front loaded, back loaded, or relatively even year to year? You’ll often even hear discussion with respect to Restricted Free Agents, such as in the case of Shea Weber currently, and attempting to sign him to such a hugely front-loaded offer sheet that Nashville could not match. I’d argue, that that is harder to do than many realize. When structuring contracts there are certain rules which restrict how much a player’s salary can increase or decrease from year to year. …

Patrick Burke (left), Rick Mercer of the CBC (center), and Brendan Burke (right), marching in the Toronto Pride Parade on Sunday, July 1.

You Can Play: Three small words, one monumental message

This past Sunday, when most hockey GMs were poring over endless notes and taking phone call after phone call regarding potential free agent signings, Toronto’s Brian Burke marched in the Toronto Pride Parade in honor of his late son, Brendan. Brendan’s brother, Patrick, a scout for the Philadelphia Flyers, marched with his father and other family members, alongside members of PFLAG (Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays). Brendan was the first person who was associated with the hockey world as being openly gay. He was the student manager of the University of Miami hockey team, and had a …

Flyers face decisions with crowded blue line

As I’m sure you are now aware, yesterday the Flyers signed Bruno Gervais to a two-year contract with a cap hit of $825k. That fact in itself isn’t too terrible. The guy is 27 years old, right handed (which must be Homer’s #1 requirement this offseason), and played over 14 minutes a night last season with Tampa Bay. In fact, he had two seasons with the Islanders where he averaged over 20 minutes a night. So the guy is probably a relatively adequate third pairing guy, that comes at a good price. However, that isn’t the problem. As Bill Meltzer …

“Rusty” speaks about Philly redux

Courtesy of the Philadelphia Flyers Q: On returning to the Flyers “I’m really excited.  I started my career there and I have great memories there.  I’m excited to have a good team and a great organization.” Q: Do you look back on the day you were traded from here and think I never would have won the Cup in Tampa, wouldn’t have scored that big goal, wouldn’t have won the Cup in Pittsburgh? “You always sometimes look back and see what journey you took, but I never looked at it that way, what if I never leave, or other things.  …
