Terry Murray speaks 6/29/12

Shortly after his re-hiring back into the Flyers organization on Friday, Terry Murray gave some brief thoughts. Below is the full transcript, courtesy of the club: Q: After all your time in the NHL, what made this job attractive to you? “Well, I got a call from Paul Holmgren before the draft.  We made a commitment over the phone to do this.  There wasn’t a lot of stuff coming in from the NHL teams after I got fired in LA.  The phone rings for about four or five days and then it goes silent, and there was nothing up until …

Murray named Phantoms head coach; Laperriere to Flyers front office

As had been rumored as far back as last week, the Flyers made it official on Friday, naming former player/assistant/scout/head coach Terry Murray the head coach of the Adirondack Phantoms. “We feel very fortunate to be able to bring Terry back to the Flyers organization as head coach of the Phantoms,” Flyers GM Paul Holmgren said.  “Terry brings a wealth of knowledge and experience, is an excellent teacher and a strong believer in the development process of young players.” “I really appreciate the opportunity to come back to the Flyers organization and I’m really looking forward to the challenge that’s …

Five Questions: Parise and/or Suter?

Flyers Faithful is pleased to have Adam Kimelman of NHL.com, Marc Siciliano of Kukla’s Corner, Dan MacNeal of Crimespree Hockey, James Minger of Flyers-Philia, and Flyers Faithful’s own Kevin Christmann participate in the current iteration of Five Questions. This is the fifth of a five-part series focusing on Free Agency that will run all week. Do you see the Flyers as major players for one or both of Zach Parise and Ryan Suter? (note: our participants’ answers were captured prior to the JVR trade.) Adam Kimelman: I think with the Flyers’ biggest need being on defense, I think they will be major players for Suter. If they lose out on him, I think they …

Behind the Crest: Matt and Alex Carle & James and Brendan van Riemsdyk

Young hockey players learn and are guided by a number of different people throughout the course of their careers. They are aided by coaches, teammates, and fellow players as they develop and pursue their dream of making it to the NHL. For a majority of players, though, the help and the coaching starts at home, long before they join so much as even a peewee league. For some, they’re learning from someone who truly does know best — either a current player or a veteran of the sport. This is the case for Alex Carle and Brendan van Riemsdyk, brothers …

This is the fourth of a five-part series focusing on Free Agency that will run all week. With rumors that Sergei Bobrovsky could be traded, what veteran goaltenders do you see as being adequate backup options to Ilya Bryzgalov? (Note: our participants had provided their answers prior to the Bobrovsky trade and Josh Harding re-signing.) Adam Kimelman: Martin Biron would be the perfect option, but I think he’s pretty happy with the Rangers and I think …

Crashing the Crease: The Book on Bryz

Ilya Bryzgalov was brought to Philadelphia to do the seemingly impossible: stop the “goaltending carousel” that has been the counterpoint to nearly every success the organization has had in the past two decades. Marked by dismal lows and remarkable highs, the first few games of the 2011-2012 season kicked off seemingly well, but rapidly started losing steam. These early-season struggles persisted and eventually culminated in Bryz’s announcement of his benching at the Winter Classic, much to the delight of the Flyers coaching staff. Goalies are notorious for being quirky and somewhat unsettling.  They are typically the kind of guy that …

This is the third of a five part series focusing on Free Agency that will run all week. There is speculation that Jaromir Jagr will re-sign with the Flyers for an additional year. Do you think he will re-sign? If not the Flyers, who else could be in the running for Jagr? Adam Kimelman: I think Jagr will look around, but eventually I think he comes back to Philadelphia for the chance to play with Claude …

Then and Now: Josh Gratton

Tim Ramholt never played a game for the Philadelphia Flyers. In fact, the only NHL game Ramholt ever took part in was as a member of the Calgary Flames in the club’s  4-1 defeat to the Anaheim Ducks on November 29, 2007. In the 2008-09 season, Ramholt was a member of the Philadelphia Flyers organization, taking part in seven games for the Philadelphia Phantoms before being shipped to the Nashville Predators in exchange for Chris Gratton’s cousin, winger Josh Gratton. Potting two goals and three assists in seven contests to start that season with the Milwaukee Admirals, Gratton split time between …

NHL HOF: Sakic, Sundin in; Roenick, Lindros out

Joe Sakic and Mats Sundin will join the ranks of the illustrious, named two of the four new inductees into the Hockey Hall of Fame. Joining the first-time candidates in the 2012 class are Pavel Bure and Adam Oates. The announcement was made Tuesday and the induction ceremony will take place November 12 in Toronto. Sakic was one of the few players who spent his entire career with one franchise. The 13-time All-Star was a first-round draft pick of the Quebec Nordiques back in 1987, eight years before they moved to Colorado and became the Avalanche. After 20 seasons, Sakic …
