Van Riemsdyk will not have surgery

Philadelphia Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren has confirmed that forward James van Riemsdyk will not undergo hip surgery. Rather, the 23-year-old New Jersey native will rehab the injury. “After consultation with various doctors regarding James’ hip injury, we have come to the conclusion that surgery is not necessary,” Holmgren said in a statement issued Friday morning. “We will treat James’ hip with alternative therapies and non-surgical procedures. It is expected that James will be 100 percent well before training camp begins.” Van Riemsdyk was limited to 43 regular-season games last season due to injuries, most notably a concussion and broken …

Time to make your shopping list! A look at the Flyers’ cap space

After what many would deem a successful season, and perhaps even more that might declare it a disappointment, the Flyers head into what should be a very interesting off-season. With multiple free agents (both Restricted and Unrestricted), some deficiencies to address, some injury concerns, a little money to spend, and some intriguing free agent options, it should prove to be an eventful Summer once more. Before we can dive into the Flyers’ current cap situation, we first need to determine what the upper limit of the salary cap will be. There is actually some uncertainty on this issue. The NHL …

Then and Now: Niko Dimitrakos

Before suffering a groin injury in the middle of February this season, Tom Sestito had played in 14 games for the Philadelphia Flyers posting an assist and 83 PIMs. The Orange and Black obtained Sestito in a trade with the Columbus Blue Jackets in February of 2011, where the Flyers shipped Greg Moore and Michael Chaput to Ohio in exchange for the hulking forward. Columbus was able to draft Sestito with the third-round pick they acquired in a draft-day deal with the San Jose Sharks in 2004, which sent a fourth-rounder in 2006 and a second-rounder in 2007 San Jose’s …

Laperriere retires, talks to local media

Ian Laperriere’s 17-year NHL career officially came to a close on Tuesday afternoon. The 38-year-old Montreal native did so in his last league stop of Philadelphia, where he spent one of the most eventful and emotional years of his days on ice. Over 1,083 games, the winger totaled 121 goals, 336 points and 1,956 penalty minutes for five clubs from 1993-2010. Those numbers are augmented by 13 points in 67 playoff appearances. A former seventh-round draft pick of the St. Louis Blues in 1992, Laperriere made his NHL debut with the Blues for one game at the end of the …

Kings deliver for long-suffering Hextall

Ron Hextall left the ice for good as a player in the Spring of 1999. It wasn’t as a triumphant hero, but as a goaltender whose best days were clearly behind him. The two less-than-iconic images fans of that era recall of the end, and how quickly it came, was of him standing helplessly as a buzzer-beating shot from Kings forward Jozef Stumpel sailed past him at the Forum in Los Angeles in February of that year and of his glaring misplay of a center-ice shot by Rangers defenseman Chris Tamer on home ice on April 5. That game against …

Summer

I’ve heard varying reports of the weather out in the Philadelphia area. Most sounding as though it’s been pleasant and mild. I checked it again today. HA! Eighties, often upper 80′s for you now. The glee I feel is that it’s been hot here in Northern Illinois and where I work lacks air conditioning. Misery loves company, right? Finals are over and I have a stack of grading that refuses to lessen despite all my efforts to grade consistently. I’m to clear out my stuff for the summer and go through my many unorganized papers. School’s out for all intents …

Then and Now: Matt Ellison

In the 2010 Stanley Cup Finals, the Chicago Blackhawks beat the Philadelphia Flyers in six games for their first title in 49 years. The team from The Second City had nine players record at least 10 points in their 22-game playoff run. One of those players was forward Patrick Sharp, who tied Dustin Byfuglien for a team-high 11 goals and finished third in points behind Conn Smythe winner Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane. Sharp used to be a member of the Philadelphia Flyers until December of 2005, when he and Eric Meloche were traded to the Blackhawks for Matt Ellison and …

Point/Counterpoint: NHL Draft 2012

Welcome to the newest edition of “Point/Counterpoint,” where a pair of Flyers Faithful scribes present both sides of one particular issue with their own unique view and flair. This week, Kevin C and Eden N are looking ahead toward the NHL draft and projecting what the Flyers should (and shouldn’t) do. Point from Eden N: DEFENSE The Flyers have a first round pick at #20, and while it’s not nearly as exciting as the #8 spot, it’s nothing to sneeze at.  I don’t claim to have even a sliver of the skills NHL scouts have accumulated over years evaluating talent across …
