Atlantic Watch: Flyers Surging, Islanders continue point streak, Rangers hanging on to playoff spot, Devils’ skid reaches 10 games

After putting themselves in a very big hole, the Philadelphia Flyers ended this week with two emphatic wins to show that they could be a playoff team. It might be too little too late, but the Orange and Black will carry their two-game winning streak into their upcoming seven-day stretch. Philly started the week with a 3-1 loss at home to the Ottawa Senators. Colin Greening put home the decisive tally with 5:36 remaining, as Robin Lehner made 24 stops in the win. Ilya Bryzgalov made 31 saves in the loss, while Claude Giroux potted the Flyers’ lone goal on …

College Hockey Roundup: Avs assistant David Quinn named BU head coach; NCAA hockey predictions and more

Well that didn’t take too long did it?  Less than 72 hours after Jack Parker’s final game guiding the Boston University men’s ice hockey program, the school found his replacement — and they decided to keep in the family. At a Tuesday morning press conference former Terrier defenseman and current Colorado Avalanche assistant coach, David Quinn was introduced as the man who will succeed Parker. Goalie: Thatcher Demko (San Diego, Calif.) We will start out in net with the most impressive player on the ice for the USNTDP Under-18. Demko is still a junior in high school, but is so talented and “mature beyond his years” as Coach Don Granato puts it, that he is in an accelerated program to earn the required high school credits before heading to Chestnut Hill. It says something about the …

College Hockey Roundup: BC wins 4th straight Beanpot; Quinnipiac #1 for the first time ever; Hockey City Classic preview

The Boston College class of 2013 etched themselves into the record books Monday night at TD Garden as the first Eagle team to sweep the Beanpot, winning their fourth straight title by defeating Northeastern, 6-3. Prior to Monday, no Boston College senior class could claim a perfect 8-0 Beanpot record — not even the Brian Gionta-led class that went to four straight Frozen Fours from 1998 to 2001. However, their arch rivals the Boston University Terriers have. From 1995 to 2000, three straight senior classes had a perfect Beanpot record. During that stretch BU won six straight titles and backed …
