On a lockout, the offseason, and more

After the Minnesota Wild signed both Zach Parise and Ryan Suter, a trend became apparent: small-market teams were spending big money while traditional big spenders remained relatively quiet. At first, this seemed to be because teams like the Flyers and Rangers were not only making big bids for the aforementioned All-Stars but were also tied up in trade talks for Rick Nash and Bobby Ryan. Now that the Collective Bargaining Agreement talks are underway, one has to wonder if the owners of big-market teams kept GMs on a short leash to see how the negotiations played out. Last offseason, many …

Flyers Mailbag #1

Welcome to the first installment of the Flyers Mailbag, where we take readers’ (not-so-serious) questions and answer them in the least sensible way possible. If you’d like to submit a question, feel free to tweet at me or comment here. From Hal Greenblatt (@HMGreenblatt): Why does @Hartsy19 (Scott Hartnell) fall so often? It’s gravity, baby. Or, he’s just really clumsy. Probably both. To be honest, I don’t have the real answer. But I do have my theories. Theory #1: there’s some sort of chip implanted somewhere on his body, and it is attracted to some sort of metal that is …

Flyers known to keep Summers interesting

It’s now the offseason, and with it comes a ton of rumors about potential trades or acquisitions — thus, the moniker of “Silly Season.” This particular one is especially interesting, with names like Rick Nash, Bobby Ryan, and Ryan Suter floating around as either pending free agents or possible trade bait. As we learned last summer, the Flyers have no problem with pulling the trigger on huge deals if it means improving their team for the future. So it’s not completely out there to think that they might make another humungous big deal during the era of sweltering heat, whether …

The JVR Conundrum

I don’t want Rick Nash. I don’t want his $7.8 million cap hit. I don’t want his $7.6 million dollar salary. I don’t want Rick Nash. I’m not sure I want James van Riemsdyk anymore, either. Whether Howard Eskin’s report of JVR delaying his torn hip labrum surgery in an effort to not get traded is true or not, JVR needs to speak up. If Eskin’s report is true, I am not upset with JVR. In all honesty, I actually like him a little bit better. The fact that he would delay surgery because he loves Philadelphia so much is …

Point/Counterpoint: Trading for Rick Nash

Welcome to the newest edition of “Point/Counterpoint,” where a pair of Flyers Faithful scribes present both sides of one particular issue with their own unique view and flair. This week Marcello D and Kim Q debate whether the Flyers should trade for Rick Nash. Point: The Flyers should trade for Nash By Marcello D Throughout the 2011-12 season, the Flyers fell short to the New York Rangers in each of their six match-ups, including a 2-0 shutout in November that started the season series. The team simply could not break through New York’s impermeable defense. The reason why is simple. …

Atlantic Watch: 2/22-2/28

The end of their four-game road trip wasn’t pretty for the Flyers, as their only two points came in a shootout win against the Calgary Flames on Saturday night. With a pair of shutout losses, the Flyers have now been shut out five times this season. The Flyers hope two games against Eastern Conference teams below them in the standings will help them gain ground in a fight for home-ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs. On Thursday, the Flyers failed to put a puck past Devan Dubnyk a single time in a 2-0 loss against the Edmonton Oilers. Taylor …
