Flyers celebrate

Around the Net for 2.28.12

Welcome to Around the Net, a look at the Philadelphia Flyers on and off the ice. This week we look at the NHL trading deadline which passed yesterday, and the deals (or lack thereof) that went down. No news is good news for JVR: The NHL trading deadline came and went and the Flyers stood pat on the day in question — but that means little as Paul Holmgren was active in the week leading up to the final day of dealing. The Pavel Kubina and Nick Grossman deals were all the tinkering the Flyers’ front office felt they needed. …

On Competing and Conceiting: Trade Deadline thoughts

Blame it on the fact that what I do for my bread and butter is sit for 40 hours a week in front of a 13″ TV and digest a constant stream of information. This was not a national holiday for me, and its responsibilities no different from any other. The reality of days like today is that it is nothing more than a last-ditch opportunity for clubs teetering on the brink of something to appear like they are doing everything to tip the scales in their favor. So when Paul Holmgren or any man in charge of the other …

Atlantic Watch: 2/15-2/21

The Flyers won two of their three games this week, as the club is still trying to turn things around before the playoffs. Although they are 4-5-2 since the All-Star break, Philly won two of their last three games. Fortunately for the Flyers, their next three games are away from the Wells Fargo Center, a scenario they are 19-9-2 in this season. In their first contest, the Flyers pounded the visiting Buffalo Sabres by a score of 7-2. After Jason Pominville and Thomas Vanek tallied in the first for Buffalo, the Flyers rattled off seven straight goals. The performance of …

Flyers

Around the Net for 2.21.12

Welcome to Around the Net, a new weekly column about the Philadelphia Flyers on and off the ice. This week, we will look back at the Flyers Wives Fight for Lives carnival and get an update on Chris Pronger; we explore the two trades the Flyers made to strengthen their defense and we examine the Rick Nash rumors and if it makes sense for Paul Holmgren to make such a deal. The Five Stages of the Trading Block

Whenever a big name becomes available around the trading deadline there are 5 stages that fans of contending teams go through.  We’re currently seeing this with Rick Nash of the Columbus Blue Jackets.  Below are the five stages of a process that drive the weak to madness and cause even the strongest to curl up in a ball in the corner. Stage 1: HOLY CRAP HE’S AVAILABLE!? A reporter reveals that the big name (Rick Nash from here on out) is on the market.  You can’t believe it.  You type in all caps on Twitter and Facebook.  This is madness.  …

Print Media

On my very messy desk (it gets bulldozed on the weekend, sometimes), sit two issues of The Hockey News. My very first two issues in truth. Being a subscriber to Gamecenter Live means I get a lot of advertisement emails from NHL.com and the like and this was the fifth email about getting 10 issues of The Hockey News for some low price. I’d just been asked to write here on flyersfaithful.com and I thought, I need to know more about hockey, why not? I like magazines and catalogues.  It might be more the joy of getting something in the …

Flight Plan Week of 10.30.2011

The Philadelphia Flyers split their four games this week. After a big win over the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Flyers dropped a bad one to the Montreal Canadiens where they looked all sorts of out of sorts against a team who was desperate for a win. Then, the Flyers continued looking discombobulated up until the end of the second period against the Winnipeg Jets in a crazy 17-goal back-and-forth shoot out at the Wells Fargo Center, the Jets barely getting out of dodge with a win they should have had locked up. Wrapping up the week, Philadelphia was able to …

Flight Plan: Week of 10.24.2010

Flight Plan is a new column that will take a more in depth look at the Flyers’ upcoming opponents every week here at Flyers Faithful. After winning their home opener, the Philadelphia Flyers were absolutely abysmal in two of the three losses against teams that had played the night before. The Flyers lost in regulation against the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Pittsburgh Penguins, and the Anaheim Ducks before exploding offensively on Saturday night against a team off to one of the hottest starts in the league in the Toronto Maple Leafs who they beat 5-2. Mike Richards notched his first …
