Flyers Hockey: The Organization

Ask anyone who is affiliated with the Philadelphia Flyers, and they will tell you that the organization is good to its players, both current and former. For proof, look no further than the team’s front office. Bobby Clarke, the longtime face of the organization while a player, is the team’s Senior Vice President. Dave Brown and Derian Hatcher both hold player personnel positions, while Craig Berube is an assistant coach. And former players Riley Cote and Terry Murray both now hold coaching positions with the Adirondack Phantoms, the Flyers’ AHL affiliate. Have you missed a Bernie Parent signing? No worries. …

Despite the fact that the revamped Flyers team of last season didn’t make it past the second round of the playoffs, they found success elsewhere — namely, the development of defensive prowess of a few of their forwards, such as Sean Couturier, Brayden Schenn, and Max Talbot. After the tragic losses of NHL enforcers due to suicide or overdoses this off-season, a handful of former players spoke out about the elephant in the room. “Today the biggest problem, which isn’t talked about…is pills,” said Ian Laperriere. It’s painkillers.” In an interview with Sports Illustrated, Laperriere said that painkillers were appropriate when necessary but that some players were taking them just for the buzz. Former Flyer and enforcer, Riley Cote, spoke out against painkillers on Facebook this morning. For those of you who do not have an account or access to the site, here is his quote: Someone needs to step in and speak up about these very preventable deaths. This absolutely crazy. These PILLS (painkillers) are mass produced, way over prescribed and are flooding the black market with pharmaceutically made, very highly addictive drugs.
