Rumor mill: Dan Boyle and, yet again, Bobby Ryan

The most glaring hole on this Philadelphia Flyers roster is the lack of a true number one defenseman.  According to Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal and Tim Panaccio of CSNPhilly.com, Dan Boyle is on the trade block and the Philadelphia Flyers are interested. “If, however, the San Jose Sharks are willing to trade the 36-year-old Boyle, who has a year left on his six-year, $40 million contract with a whopping $6.6 million cap hit, the Flyers have interest” Panaccio wrote. And Matheson stated, “He’d be excellent in Philadelphia, where the Flyers are crying for offence, but again, his age …

Moments of Awesome (in class with hockey)

Other than the constant ‘Hey, the Chicago Blackhawks are…” whatever their streak is now, I don’t get to talk much hockey in American Literature. I have two students, one a Toronto Maple Leafs fan and his twin is a Montreal Canadiens follower.  We chat sometimes, but they both give me grief about being a Philadelphia Flyers fan. Not that either of their current teams have so much to be pompous about, but I digress. When hockey does come up in class, I seriously do an internal little dance. For a moment or two, I don’t have to talk about Nathaniel …

Then and Now: Nolan Baumgartner

After the New York Islanders picked Brett Lindros ninth overall in the 1994 NHL Draft, the Washington Capitals selected defenseman Nolan Baumgartner. The four players picked after the Canadian d-man were former San Jose Shark and New Jersey Devil Jeff Friesen, Wade Belak, Mattias Ohlund, and Ethan Moreau. All four of those players turned out to play more seasons in the NHL than Baumgartner, who totaled 10 years at hockey’s highest level. Baumgartner suited up for the Caps, Chicago Blackhawks, Vancouver Canucks, and the Pittsburgh Penguins before he became a member of the Philadelphia Flyers in 2006. The blue liner signed …

Then and Now: David Laliberte

Ryan Callahan has played five seasons with the New York Rangers. Before the start of the 2011-2012 NHL campaign, Callahan was named the Rangers’ captain, an honor he holds at the moment as well. His first season as captain of New York was also his first 50-point year in the NHL, as he was just one goal shy of the 30-goal plateau. Not bad for a right winger who was picked 127th overall in the fourth round of the 2004 NHL Draft. The last right winger selected before Callahan came just three picks earlier, as the Philadelphia Flyers chose David …

Trenton Update: 11/9-11/15

In a schedule quirk, the Trenton Titans’ last five games have all come against the Reading Royals. The Titans lost every single one of those contests and are currently on a six-game losing streak, as they have gained only one point in the process. Three of Trenton’s losses to the Royals came this past weekend, as the club was minutes away from ending their losing streak. After coming up short in both of the clubs’ meetings last week, the Titans dropped last Friday’s meeting in a 2-1 affair at the Sun National Bank Center. Bryan Haczyk leveled the game at one with his third …

Then and Now: Joe Sacco

Joe Sacco played for four different teams in the NHL over 12 seasons before he signed a contract with the Philadelphia Flyers’ organization in January of 2003. Sacco split time with the Flyers and the Philadelphia Phantoms during the 2002-2003 campaign. After producing four goals and three assists in six games in the AHL, Sacco was called up to the Flyers and spent the rest of the season in the NHL. He had a total of six points in 34 games for the Flyers with five assists along with 20 PIMs and an even plus/minus rating. The right winger’s only …

Then and Now: Freddy Meyer

In May of 2003, the Philadelphia Flyers signed defenseman Freddy Meyer to an entry-level contract. The mobile d-man was coming off a season at Boston University where he had five goals and 16 assists in 38 games as the Terriers’ captain. During the 2003-2004 season with the Flyers’ organization, Meyer spent the majority of the campaign in the AHL with the Philadelphia Phantoms. He had the second-most goals for a blue liner on the team with 14 goals in 59 games, while John Slaney led the team with 19 goals in the same number of tilts as Meyer. The American defender also had 14 helpers, 50 PIMs, …

Then and Now: Andrew Alberts

Scott Hartnell often flirts with dirty play on the ice, but it doesn’t result in much more than trash talk or an action to irritate his opponent. Over the span of his 13-year professional career, the left winger has only been suspended once. In a game against the Boston Bruins on November 26, 2007, one of Beantown’s defensemen dropped to their knees to make a play on the puck near the boards. With the defender on his knees, Hartnell checked the blue liner which resulted in the defenseman’s head being slammed into the glass. Hartsy received a two-game suspension for his hit …

Then and Now: Luke Richardson

Defenseman Luke Richardson joined the Philadelphia Flyers in the summer of 1997, as he signed a five-year contract where he earned $2.5 million in the first four years and $2.6 million in his final season. After reaching the postseason just twice with the Edmonton Oilers in his six-year span with the club from 1991-97, Richardson helped the Flyers reach the playoffs each of the five seasons he was in Philly. In his initial campaign, the Flyers finished third in the Eastern Conference with 95 points, as only the New Jersey Devils and Pittsburgh Penguins finished with more. Richardson played in …
