The New Jersey Devils injected a dose of reality into the plans of the Philadelphia Flyers, using a three-goal third period to claim a 4-1 decision in the opener of a home-and-home series Sunday night from Prudential Center. Ilya Kovalchuk did his usual damage, tallying a goal and two assists. Zach Parise and Patrik Elias picked up a goal and helper apiece, while Martin Brodeur worked his magic by stopping 18-of-19 shots. Keep those number 35 jerseys stored away, because we in Flyerdom won’t be seeing 23-year old netminder Sergei Bobrovsky for a while. It appears as though Peter Laviolette has decided to let incumbent Ilya Bryzgalov keep the keys to the Flyers nets. Since returning from the flu, Bryzgalov has started nine straight games. In his last nine starts, Bryzgalov has a 2.33 GAA and a .912 save percentage. Bryz also recorded his third shut out of the season in that span. Only once in the last nine games have we seen the man Flyers fans affectionately call “Bob.” Bobrovsky came …

The Flyers won two of their three games this week, as the club is still trying to turn things around before the playoffs. Although they are 4-5-2 since the All-Star break, Philly won two of their last three games. Fortunately for the Flyers, their next three games are away from the Wells Fargo Center, a scenario they are 19-9-2 in this season. In their first contest, the Flyers pounded the visiting Buffalo Sabres by a score of 7-2. The Flyers managed to hold on for a one-goal win Thursday before they dropped both of their games on the weekend to go 1-2-0 this week. The win was the Flyers’ second since the All-Star break, as they are 2-4-2 since the break with both wins coming at home. Philly looks forward to two games against Eastern Conference teams outside the playoff picture in the next few days, as well as a meeting with the Penguins to determine crucial points in the standings. Scott Hartnell recorded a Gordie Howe hat trick, while Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 24 shots in the Flyers’ 4-3 win over the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs tonight. Brayden Schenn scored his sixth goal of the season late in the second period for his first game-winning goal in the NHL, as the Flyers ended their season-high three-game losing streak. Max Talbot and Claude Giroux were the other two Flyers to score in the second period. After a dominant victory on Thursday against one of the hotter teams in the league, the Flyers proceeded to drop their next handful of games to suffer their first three-game losing streak of the season. Poor starts and poor goaltending hurt the Flyers over the weekend, as the only other point they gained this week was from last night’s shootout loss. Thanks to a huge third period, the Flyers turned a six-goal deficit after two periods into a 6-4 loss at home to the New Jersey Devils this afternoon. Alexei Ponikarovsky recorded his 300th NHL point with an assist in the first period before he put home the game-winner less than two minutes into the second period for his second two-point game as a Devil. Laud Bob, learn from Bob When Dmitry Chesnokov interviewed Sergei Bobrovsky for Puck Daddy this offseason, he asked him about Ilya Bryzgalov’s contract. “What I understood from last season is that if you play well, show the result, then you play for the first team,” said Bobrovsky. “If not, you are benched.
