The Philadelphia Flyers had 10 draft picks in the 1989 NHL Entry Draft. Of those 10 picks, only three players went on to play in the NHL. One of those picks was Greg Johnson, a center that took part in 785 NHL games, but none of them with the Flyers. Another was Reid Simpson, a left winger who played in one game for the Orange and Black. The third player was Patrik Juhlin, who competed in 56 games for Philadelphia. The biggest news in terms of current and past Philadelphia Flyers is the signing of Brandon Manning to a one-year deal. The blue liner has appeared in 10 games for the Orange and Black over the last two seasons, as well as 111 games for the Adirondack Phantoms. He has two assists and a plus-5 rating in the NHL and 12 goals with 28 assists, as well as 216 PIMs, in the AHL. Manning will come with a cap hit of $675,000 next season. The biggest news of the week, in terms of where former Philadelphia Flyers went, is Michael Leighton signing in the KHL. The former Flyer did not play a single game as a Columbus Blue Jacket in 2013, as he has joined Donbass Donetsk for the 2013-2014 campaign. Leighton didn’t play a single game for the Flyers in 2011-2012 and only appeared in one game during the 2013 shortened season. As usual, several former members of the Philadelphia Flyers’ organization and draft picks moved this week, as four of the players suited up for the Orange and Black in recent seasons. The group of Ilya Bryzgalov, Kurtis Foster, Sean O’Donnell, and Nikolay Zherdev earned new titles within the last seven days.
