Hockey Hilarity: Ovechkin for Tocchet and Peanuts

Friday funnies brought to you straight from hockey’s own players, media personnel, and broadcast botches. We’ll be mucking it up every week right here, examining puck ups, puns, tweets, and more! The Washington Capitals were, as per usual, eliminated from the playoffs. Also, as per usual, Alex Ovechkin was not a factor. I realize that last week we did an Ovechkin thing, and as much as I shouldn’t rag on the guy because when he’s on, he’s one of the best players in the world, but there has been much talk about trying to deal him and what the Caps intend …

Embracing Bryz As Is

Ilya Bryzgalov is one of the most entertaining Flyers in the history of the team. He’s bizarre in almost every way. He’s got this odd voice that ranges from stereotypical movie villain Russian to high-pitched craziness. I’m not a fan of his goaltending. He’s far too inconsistent to rely on. His contract is absurd. It’s a love-hate thing with Bryz for sure. On May 9th, Bryz was benched for a game against France in the 2013 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship. His Twitter account put out a bunch of Angry Birds Star Wars trophies (automated messages from the game), followed …

Twitter: Flyers Fan Persecution Site

This is what I have to endure. Readers who are Flyers fans from elsewhere, you’ll understand. This first is from one of my students (name changed for obvious reasons). The second is my response.   @ecnewmanhockey *cough* 2-1 devils ???? — Student (@student) March 13, 2013   @student *cough* 5-2 Devils. Your point? — ecnewman (@ecnewmanhockey) March 13, 2013   Well, it does make me laugh because I didn’t get a response. Shut down.

Hockey Hilarity: Classic Mix-up 2.0

Friday funnies brought to you straight from hockey’s own players and media personnel. We’ll be mucking it up every week right here, examining puck ups, puns, tweets, and more! You may recall a couple of months ago, Philadelphia Flyers forward Jake Voracek sent out a tweet about how he was mistaken for one Claude Giroux while hanging out in Montreal. You can read that snippet by clicking here. Well, it happened again, but this time with a twist. Claude Giroux was falsely identified as one Jake Voracek in Prague. Gotta love hockey players. Hope everyone has a nice week and comes back …

Hockey Hilarity: Sweater Switch

Friday funnies brought to you straight from hockey’s own players and media personnel. We’ll be mucking it up every week right here, examining puck ups, puns, tweets, and more! Something that happens quite often when players sign with or are traded to a new team is a change of the number that they use on their jersey. Last year, newly-signed Philadelphia Flyers forward Max Talbot had to wear the number 27 jersey as his regular number 25, yes the one he wore for the cross-state rival Pittsburgh Penguins, was taken by none other than the polarizing and now departed defenseman Matt …
