The Philadelphia Flyers were able to extend their point streak to four games this week, as they earned a shootout loss to the Florida Panthers and an overtime win over the Carolina Hurricanes. Although they were dominated in Toronto, the Orange and Black did a good job of rebounding to earn their second road win of the year last night in Winnipeg. The Philadelphia Flyers’ troubles away from the Wells Fargo Center continued tonight, as they were pummeled by the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-2 at the Air Canada Centre. Matt Frattin had a goal and an assist for the Maple Leafs, while Cody Franson and Nazem Kadri each had two assists in front of their home crowd. Colton Orr had the game-winning goal and James van Riemsdyk scored against his former team, as James Reimer earned the victory despite leaving the game early in the second period due to an injury. Scott Laughton participated in 32 games for the Oshawa Generals of the OHL before he joined the Philadelphia Flyers’ roster for the start of the 2013 season. The gritty forward suited up for five games with Philly before the Orange and Black sent him down. Danny Briere scored his second goal of the season at 1:47 of overtime as the Philadelphia Flyers sent Carolina Hurricanes home with a loss for the second straight Saturday, winning 4-3. Briere took an outlet pass from Nicklas Grossmann along the boards, crossed up the defense, and sent a wrist shot, which deflected off the far post and then off the backside of ‘Canes goalie Cam Ward and over the goal line. Goaltender Anthony Stolarz had a record of 2-5-0 and a save percentage under .900 with the University of Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks before he joined the London Knights of the OHL in early January. Since his move, Stolarz has appeared in six games for the Knights and has yet to lose. The first period of tonight’s game was sloppy, fast paced, and loaded with ups and downs. Here are some noteworthy items: The defensemen are playing terrible defensively but they are also jumping into the play, generating offense and scoring goals. Obviously, there needs to be more balance here but, if the defense can spark the forwards, less pressure will be put on the defense and it will all work out in the long run. Future Looks Bright For Scott Laughton

Scott Laughton is not the fastest, nor is he the biggest (6’1, 177 pounds) or the oldest (just 18 years old). He is not the most talented. But, what Scott Laughton did during his five-game trial with the Philadelphia Flyers proved that he could play at the NHL level. During Laughton’s brief stint with the Flyers, he registered zero goals, zero assists, and obviously, zero points. He averaged 11:31 a game, and that time is just not enough to develop a player with his style. I agree with the Flyers’ decision to send Laughton back to Oshawa to play with …
