Atlantic Watch: 3/21-3/27

In their three home games this week, the Flyers were able to clinch a playoff spot with a pair of wins over teams currently sitting outside the postseason scenario. Unfortunately, Ilya Bryzgalov suffered a chip fracture in his right foot. Hopefully for Philly, Bryzgalov will be back by the end of next week when the club takes on the Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Rangers as part of their four-game schedule over the next few days. On Thursday, the Orange and Black earned two points against the Washington Capitals with a 2-1 shootout win at the Wells Fargo Center. Wayne Simmonds potted …

Roloson’s Goaltending And Carle’s Goof Lead To Flyers’ Loss

The Flyers may have outshot the Tampa Bay Lightning 38-15 in tonight’s contest, but Dwayne Roloson stopped 35 to lead the Bolts to a 5-3 win over the Flyers. It didn’t help that Matt Carle flubbed a routine play behind the Flyers’ net to hand Tampa Bay the game-winning goal in the third period, as the Lightning beat Philly for a third time in the four-game series. With just under three minutes left in the third period, the Flyers were looking for the game-tying goal when Carle skated behind Ilya Bryzgalov’s cage. Without any pressure from the Lightning’s forwards, Carle …

Briere Scores Twice, Flyers Beat Habs 4-1

For the first time since his hat-trick on January 7th against the Ottawa Senators, Danny Briere registered a goal that wasn’t an empty-netter in the Flyers’ 4-1 win over the Montreal Canadiens tonight. Briere’s two goals came at a crucial time in Philly’s victory, as his pair of power-play tallies in the second period helped the Flyers win their third game of the season over the Canadiens. “I just want to find a way to keep scoring goals,” said Briere. “It’s been an up and down season but the team keeps winning and that is all that matters.” Special teams played …

Read And Simmonds Score in Shootout, Flyers Beat Caps 2-1

After an early goal from Alex Ovechkin, the Flyers were able to rally back for a 2-1 win over the Washington Capitals in a shootout tonight at the Wells Fargo Center. The victory was the third of the season against the Caps and the Flyers’ fourth in a shootout. Following the opening round of the shootout, where Matt Read and Matt Hendricks scored for their respective teams, Wayne Simmonds beat Braden Holtby glove-side on the Flyers’ fourth turn for the extra point. To close it out, Ilya Bryzgalov, who made 30 saves in the game, denied Troy Brouwer for his third shootout …

Atlantic Watch: 3/14-3/20

A dominant win over the New York Islanders and a pair of comebacks helped the Flyers gain five crucial points in the standings this week, as Philly still has a slim chance to win the Eastern Conference. Unfortunately, the only game in which the Flyers didn’t earn a point may have been their most impressive performance, as they posted 23 more shots than the Panthers in their one-goal game loss last night. Three games against three clubs that are lower in the conference standings should help the Flyers a lot over the next couple days, as the Orange and Black hope to clinch a …

A Record-Setting Night as the Flyers Best the Islanders 3-2

It was a night of accomplishments for the Flyers in a 3-2 win over the New York Islanders on Thursday night, none bigger than Ilya Bryzgalov setting a new franchise record for longest scoreless streak at 249:43. With less than 10 minutes to go in the third period, it looked like Bryzgalov was on the way to his fourth straight shutout, but the Islanders finally managed to figure him out. Michael Grabner tipped the puck past him with 6:30 left, and only 35 seconds later, the Islanders scored again – this time on a snap shot in the slot by …

Bryzgalov Blanks Panthers, Flyers Extend Win Streak To Four

The Flyers dominated the Florida Panthers tonight at the Wells Fargo Center for a 5-0 win, which extend their winning streak to four games. Ilya Bryzgalov had another amazing performance, as he made 28 saves for his second shutout in a three-game span. Bryzgalov’s fourth shutout of the season came without the help of defensemen Kimmo Timonen, Andrej Meszaros, and Pavel Kubina. Bryzgalov earned the first star of the game and it was clearly deserved. The Flyers’ goalie, who recorded his 27th career shutout, made crucial saves early in the game, after both of the bouts in the contest, and late in …

JvR Hurt, Read Pots Pair In Win Over Islanders

After a road trip where they were shut out twice, the Flyers came home and handled the New York Islanders for a 6-3 win tonight. Matt Read, Claude Giroux, and Andrej Meszaros each recorded three-point performances, while Ilya Bryzgalov made 21 saves for the victory. Read, who ended a 12-game goal drought, had a pair of crucial tallies tonight. “It was a little struggle there for the last month,” Read said. “I just know I’ve got to work hard, keep working hard and things are going to start going my way. Two good plays by Mez (Meszaros) and Simmer (Wayne …

Third Period Surge Not Enough, Niemi Blanks Flyers 1-0

For the second time in their road trip, the Flyers failed to score, as Antti Niemi led the Sharks to a 1-0 win tonight in San Jose. A goal from Ryane Clowe in the game’s first few minutes was all Niemi needed, as the former Chicago Blackhawk made 26 saves to blank the visiting Flyers. For a second straight game, Ilya Bryzgalov allowed the game’s first goal on his first shot against. This time, however, the goalie bounced back to make several incredible saves to give the Flyers a chance to conclude their road trip with a victory. Their inability to convert on chances, as …
