It may have not been pretty, but the Philadelphia Flyers did just enough to grab the home win by a score of 2-1 over the visiting injury-riddled New York Rangers. Matt Read and Braydon Coburn scored for the home squad, while Steve Mason denied 30 of New York’s 31 shots on net. For New York, Brad Richards was the benefactor of a fortunate bounce for the team’s lone goal, while Cam Talbot made 25 saves in NHL debut. Penguins Ice Philadelphia; Flyers Fall To 1-7

Chris Kunitz scored for Pittsburgh at the 12:13 of the second period to give the Penguins a 2-0 lead, as they would eventually hold on to beat the Flyers 4-1 Thursday night in Philadelphia. Kunitz’s game winning goal came off a rebound from Pascal Dupuis. Defenseman Matt Nikanen also assisted on the goal. Pittsburgh’s first goal came from Jussi Jokinen and was assisted by Evgeni Malkin. The Penguins got their insurance goal from Sidney Crosby off a redirection from Dupuis. Malkin scored an empty net goal from Craig Adams and Crosby to ice the game. The Philadelphia Flyers fired coach Peter Laviolette after a loss last Sunday to the Carolina Hurricanes. They promoted Craig Berube to head coach. Since then, they are 1-2-0, as they beat the Florida Panthers on Tuesday, but lost to the Phoenix Coyotes and the Detroit Red Wings, and have scored just five goals in that span. The Philadelphia Flyers lost for the fifth time this season tonight in Detroit, as they lost to the Red Wings by the count of 5-2. Niklas Kronwall had a goal and two assists and Henrik Zetterberg had two goals and one assist, while Daniel Alfredsson had three helpers in the win for Detroit. Jimmy Howard stopped 32 shots for the win, while his team produced three goals on the power play.
