Four intriguing NCAA free agents who fit the Flyers’ mold

The Flyers have had recent success fishing the NCAA talent pool for late-bloomers and overlooked players. Matt Read and Harry Zolnierczyk are two of the current Flyers that took the academic route, playing four seasons each of NCAA hockey. Read is a small forward from Bemidji State University who came out of school at 24 years old. The Calgary native was named the CHA Rookie of the Year in 2007-08 and the CHA Player of the Year in 2009-10. As a senior captain in 2010-11, Read was named to the WCHA All-Academic Team. In 1995, John Greenhalgh and Jeff Millman sought to create an award that honors one college hockey player that embodies what is right about the game of hockey. Each year their foundation board gathers nominations from every college varsity hockey program in the country male and female in Divisions I-III. Both Millman and Greenhalgh have spent countless hours over the years reading biographies of Rhodes Scholar candidates, team captains, and volunteers helping our youth, the handicapped, and the disadvantaged. The Trenton Titans saw their five-game win streak and their seven-game point streak snapped this week, as the squad lost a pair of games to the Conference-leading Reading Royals. Although the Titans managed to eke out an overtime victory last Thursday against their division rival, Trenton lost back-to-back contests to Reading on Friday and Saturday to suffer consecutive losses for the first time since December 8-9. Friday’s setback was nearly a spectacular comeback, as the Titans lost 5-4 at the Sovereign Center.
