Quinnipiac earns top seed as Frozen Four field set

Quinnipiac University, regular-season champions in the ECAC, was selected as the top overall seed as the field of 16 teams was announced for the 2013 NCAA men’s ice hockey tournament on Sunday night. The Bobcats (27-7-5), who spent multiple weeks atop the national rankings in the second half of the campaign, will open up as the top program in the East Region at Providence, RI. Despite a sudden exit in the ECAC semifinals to eventual playoff champion Yale, the Connecticut-based school garnered enough notice to gain the lofty honor. This past weekend was not kind to the nation’s best. The top four teams in the USCHO.com D-1 men’s poll all suffered losses, and among those a 21-game unbeaten streak was snapped. All eyes were back on the ice on Saturday in the City of Brotherly Love. After a grueling wait, NHL fans got their wish. However, Penn State against Vermont in the Philadelphia College Hockey Faceoff stole the spotlight. As fans donning the colors of their favorite Pennsylvania NHL team filed out of the Wells Fargo Center, others were on their way in representing the entire state with their blue and white.
